July 2017 Sungai Buloh-completed and open to the public within budget and schedule
The Kajang MRT line was built with the help of 10 tunnel rigs (TBM)
Eight of them are the most complex of their kind in the world.
According to Datuk Ubull Din Om, general manager of Gamuda Engineering Co. , Ltd. , partnership between Bhd-mmcka MMC and Gamuda KVMRT (T)Sdn Bhd (or MGKT)
-Due to the competitive price and technical strength of the SBK line, especially after completing line 9, the bid for the underground part of the SBK line was won. 5km-
Long Rain management and traffic Tunnel (SMART)
In Kuala Lumpur in 2007.
\"Our bid for Sungai BulohSerdang-
The bustown MRT Line (MRT2) also allowed us to reach agreement on the construction of 11 subway stations and 13 subway stations.
\"5 km pairs of tunnels,\" said Ubull . \".
The SSP tunnel starts from Jalan Ipoh to Bandar, Malaysia (South).
So far, MGKT has been working for 24 months and completed a quarterly underground route.
Although MGKT managed to complete the SBK production line with a relatively small hiccup, it did not do the job easily.
\"If people think it\'s simpler to build the underground part of the SSP line after we finish the SBK line, it\'s really a misconception,\" Ubull said, adding that, engineers must face three different geological formations, mainly karst, Kenney and granite.
Karst rock is a kind of weathered limestone similar to Swiss cheese, while the formation of Kenney Mountain is dominated by various sandstone and shale layers.
\"At the SBK line, we have to deal with two different types of formations, karst and Kenney Mountain.
\"Now, we have to deal with three different materials and the tunnel rig has to go through seven geological fault lines,\" he said . \".
To put it simply, the geological fault is a plane crack formed by the significant movement of the rock mass caused by high structural stress.
Tunnels crossing faults are risky because underground materials can be broken and groundwater is likely to flow in.
Even while MGKT is working on the SBK line, it is actively planning how to retain talent for future underground construction work, especially those involved in the construction of tunnels using tunnel rigs.
After all, the human factor in the building is as important as the complex machinery.
\"MMC Gamuda established the training institute for tunnel engineering (TTA)
As well as the tunnel engineering renovation plant, it is a significant investment in sustainable human capital, \"said Mohd Fuad Kamal Ariffin, general manager of MGKT operations.
\"The TTA was established in 2011 to meet the human needs of tunnel construction for subway tunnel projects.
\"To date, more than 500 tunnel workers have been trained and by the end of the SSP tunnel work, the number will increase to 1,000,\" Fuad added . \".
The renovation plant, located in Ipoh, per state, was established in 2014 as a means to extend the life of TBMs used for the first time by SBK lines.
In theory, since every component that makes up its internal structure can be replaced or repaired, the tunnel can use almost unlimited time.
Some workers who have completed their work in the SBK production line are sent to the renovation plant to improve their skills so that they are also familiar with the disassembly and maintenance of the machine.
\"Then, they reassembled the machine again, which deepened their understanding of the entire maintenance and operation process of the TBM,\" Fuad said . \".
\"In fact, the plant is also an extension of TTA, where local talent learns the entire cycle of manufacturing, operation, maintenance and repair.
\"This means direct investment in human capital, which will ensure the sustainable development of skilled workers and thus reduce our dependence on foreign workers.
\"MGKT focuses on producing skilled labor for the country, which means we now have a tunnel labor force with terminalsto-
Having the ultimate technical expertise in the global market, which in turn increases the value of their human capital.
The technology and knowledge can be transferred from TTA and renovation plants.
Fuad estimates that by the time the Basheng Valley MRT project is completed, about 1,000 skilled Malaysians will be proficient in underground construction.
\"We will have an entire team of experts who know the risks on the ground and they know how to deal with them,\" he said . \".
At present, MGKT will complete the SSP production line in the best possible way in full compliance with the safety agreement.
Ubull himself is very confident that even in the case of increased risk and difficulty, things can still be controlled as long as no one relaxes their vigilance.
\"The work of building a tunnel in the Basheng Valley can only become more difficult, not easier, because the tunnel runs through the central business district of the city, and more, ubull said: \"The tunnel will be built in or near developed areas of high-rise buildings or deep foundations, even under existing tunnels. \".
\"In the absence of wanting to sound overly confident, we are very pleased with the machines we renovated, which were modified after learning from the SBK line.
\"Whether in Malaysia or elsewhere, we are ready to meet more challenges with our dedicated team.
The MGKT has become a real contender for tunnel engineering because of its ability to assemble, operate and renovate TBMs, Fuad said.
At the end of the SSP tunnel project it will have 12 refurbished TBMs and a very capable team as it tries to build more rail tunnels, at the same time, the benefits of cost savings are transferred to the project owners.
