Analysis of Japan's cumulative machine tool orders in the first three quarters of 2011

The latest preliminary data on machine tool orders released by the Japan Machine Tool Industry Association (JMTBA) shows that in September 2011, Japan's machine tool orders were 110.679 billion yen, an increase of 11.9% month-on-month and 20.3% year-on-year. From January to September, Japan's machine tool orders exceeded 100 billion yen for 8 months, and only fell below 100 billion yen in August. In the first three quarters of 2011, Japan's cumulative machine tool orders amounted to 997.271 billion yen, an increase of 41.9% over the same period in 2010, and this data has exceeded the order amount of 978.622 billion yen for the whole year of 2010. According to the forecast of Motohiko Yokoyama, the president of JMTBA, the order value of Japanese machine tools in 2011 is expected to reach 1.3 trillion yen, an increase of about 30% compared with 2010. If this goal can be achieved, Japan's machine tool orders will basically return to the level of 2008. From the perspective of domestic and foreign demand, in September, Japan's domestic machine tool orders were 35.738 billion yen, down 4.9% month-on-month, but up 31.8% year-on-year. In September, Japan's overseas machine tool orders were 74.941 billion yen, an increase of 22.1% from the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 15.5%. In the first three quarters, the cumulative domestic orders for Japanese machine tools were 317.043 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 44.3%; the cumulative overseas orders were 680.228 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 40.8%.
