selecting the best air compressor for woodworking

by:Gewinn     2020-06-04
My understanding of making hardwood furniture tells me that about half of the time it takes to build each chair, table or cabinet is treated with sanding.
When you are trying to make a living in the woodworking industry with the employees working hours, you have to minimize the inefficiency.
This does not mean becoming a tyrant, but it is best to remove any obstacles that may interfere with construction, sanding and finishing.
I started my carpentry career in a quarter.
Sheet electric sander, who soon graduated from the track electric sander, finally realized that I could significantly shorten the sanding time with the air Palm Sander.
I have set up a 5 \"Dynabrade sander and Sears 3HP air compressor.
It took me less than an hour to realize my mistake: the small compressor I bought couldn\'t start keeping up with the air needs of the air Sander.
It runs out of air pressure almost immediately, and the air Sander slows down to a point where it doesn\'t work.
I then had to wait a few minutes for the pressure to increase again to get another minute of sanding.
Another problem is that I hired three people as Sanders, so I need to keep the three Sanders running at high speed all day.
I did some arithmetic and found that in order to keep up with the demand I needed a 10 hp air compressor with a large tank.
I was lucky enough to find a second hand product at a reasonable price, but it requires three-phase power sources and a lot of power supplies.
I have to consider the extra cost of the electrician connecting it to the building 208 v 3phase power.
The huge air compressor is so loud that it can be heard throughout the building and throughout the block, but it runs these three Sanders in a row.
The good news is that it quickly pays for its own productivity.
Sanders airlines is active and effective.
They are light in weight compared to their smaller electric cousins.
My Sanders found them right away and production started.
I am as happy as they are.
Soon, in addition to the air compressor, there is another machine in the store that needs a lot of air: Onsrud reverse pin router.
It\'s also great to be able to blow the sawdust out of the bench and machine at the end of the day when cleaning the store with a vacuum cleaner.
The compressor is also used to spray finishes on finished furniture.
A few years later, I built a smaller woodworking shop at home and only needed an air Sander at a time.
For that store, I bought a half size air compressor and isolated it in a soundproof room part of the store.
I run the galvanized pipe below the workshop at three different connection positions to three regulators.
The machine I purchased for that store was a 5 hp Ingersoll Rand model with an 80 gallon tank.
At the 80 PSI required by my Dynabrade sander, the compressor produces enough air from morning to night.
I must say that the compressor is very well built.
All I have to do is pay close attention to the oil level in the sight glass.
In the evening, I turn off the main air valve on the side of the compressor and leave the electricity on to mute the compressor until the next working day.
I have to assume that having read so much, you are interested in using an air compressor in your wood shop to power the air tool.
Most likely 2-
The first-class reciprocating air compressor can meet the needs of small and medium-sized workshops.
According to the rule of thumb, a 5 hp air compressor will power a Sander, a 7.
5 HP machines will power 2 and 10 HP machines will be required for 3 Sanders.
The size of the compressor\'s air tank is an important factor: the smaller the tank, the higher the frequency the motor needs to be turned on and off, and over time it is difficult for both the motor and the compressor pump to do this, it uses more power.
I will never buy an air compressor that is used to run an air Sander that is less than 60 gallons of fuel, and I will feel more comfortable using an 80 gallon tank.
The type of power required for an air compressor is another thing you would like to consider.
If you have three
There is phase power in your building, very good. Three-
Phase motors use power more efficiently than single motorsphase motors.
Industrial Air compressors usually require 3-
Phase power, but there are 5 hp models.
If you don\'t have 3-
The phase power supply is available and you can create it with a rotating or electronic phase converter like I did in my shop.
Whether you use single or three
Phase power, you will need 230 v ac power
Three-phase motor and 208 to 220 v ac motorphase type.
Be sure to check its voltage and AMP requirements before purchasing any air compressor.
Electricians can drain water economically. A two-
For this size air compressor, the stage compressor pump is a must. Two-
The first-class air compressor has two cylinders, one larger than the other.
The air is first sucked into the large cylinder, partially compressed in the large cylinder, then sent to the small cylinder and finally compressed into the tank.
Heat is generated when the air is compressed, so a good machine always has a fin-type intercooler built in.
Compression will not only generate heat, but will also squeeze water out of the air that eventually enters the tank.
Over time, the inside of the tank will rust, and if it is not controlled, the rusted air tank will eventually explode, causing serious damage or even death.
This is why it is very important to empty the tank every day.
Most air compressors are equipped with drain valves at the lowest point of the tank.
If you do not want to spray water on the floor under the machine, you may consider piping it from the valve to another place, such as under the floor or in the drain.
Pipe water flows up into the sink as it is pushed out of the tank by air pressure.
You need at least one regulator and one water trap before the regulator.
These are not expensive.
The regulator allows you to set the correct air pressure for the tool to be used (say, 80 PSI)
Instead of tank pressure (say, 175 PSI).
The air output of the compressor is expressed in standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM)
Or only cubic feet per minute (CFM).
Not all 5 HP compressors have the same amount of air per minute.
This is not only a function of motor horsepower, but also a function of the efficiency of the air compressor pump powered by the motor.
The higher the CFM, the less need your motor to cycle up and down to meet your requirements for it.
A small compressor pump on a huge tank will produce no more air than on a small tank.
The only difference is the number of times the compressor turns off the cycle every hour and the time it takes for each cycle to re-compress the tank.
In the final analysis you need to pay attention to SCFM (or CFM)
Larger than your car\'s horsepower or tank size.
The airflow is the final product of any compressor and the CFM must be sufficient to complete the work at hand.
All reciprocating air compressors discharge some oil with their compressed air.
When the tank reaches the pressure limit, the switch will interrupt the power supply of the motor.
At the same time, a certain amount of oily air will be released to the store environment.
Over time, you may see oil gathering on the wall, pump and compressor behind the compressor.
This is not the reason for the alarm but may require regular cleaning. Reciprocating (piston type)
The air compressor is loud and for yourself, your workers, and the rest of the neighborhood, that\'s what you need to anticipate.
If quiet is an important consideration, you may want to buy a screw for extra money
Air compressor. Screw-
There are no pistons and cylinders in the compressor.
The air is compressed in a turbine way through a large metal screw, turning at a very high speed.
These machines are just purring compared to reciprocating, but they are very expensive.
They sound more like a quiet jet engine than a loud truck engine.
I hope this information will be useful to you.
When you consider pipe, regulator, hose, water jacket, wire and electric hours, buying an air compressor for your woodworking workshop can be a fairly expensive investment.
You will want to buy a compressor that will be able to complete the task you are asking for, but will not exceed this one.
Buying the wrong air compressor can be a very expensive mistake.
My motivation for writing this article is to give you the right knowledge to choose from.
