U.S. machine tool consumption and orders both rose year-on-year in January

The latest statistics on US machine tool consumption jointly released by the American Association of Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and the American Machine Tool Distributors Association (AMTDA) show that in January 2010, the US machine tool production was 856 units, a decrease of 500 units compared with December 2009. . The total consumption of machine tools in the US market in the month was 130.96 million US dollars, although it fell by 40.3% month-on-month, but increased by 26.2% year-on-year. In terms of product categories, the consumption of metal cutting machine tools was US$122.91 million, down 34.4% month-on-month and up 34.5% year-on-year; the consumption of metal forming and manufacturing machine tools was US$8.05 million, down 74.9% month-on-month and 35.0% year-on-year. According to Peter Borden, chairman of AMTDA, many machine tool user companies placed orders in December 2009 in order to catch up with preferential measures such as tax reduction and exemption, and consumed part of the orders that should have occurred in January 2010. Fortunately, orders in January this year still showed a 26% year-on-year increase.
