Faru won the 'National Defense Manufacturing Merit Award'

by:Gewinn     2022-05-01
The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) has formed a team dedicated to finding ways to improve manufacturing processes for Navy submarine tapered shafts and aircraft carrier thruster shafts. The team has three components: the National Defense Manufacturing and Processing Center, Penn State University's Applied Research Laboratory and Faro Technologies. Their solutions included the development of advanced measurement systems to reduce steps and time during shaft manufacturing and final inspection. Using its laser tracker, FARO can precisely map the complete surface shape of each cone of the thruster shaft on the machine tool, and provides the corresponding software system for this solution. The solution reduced the inspection process from 72 hours to 24 hours, a time savings of 66% compared to previous methods. And because it's easier to switch to multiple axes and multiple docks, it eliminates the need to use expensive gauges and makes inspection more uniform. All of this reduced operating time, saving the dock as much as $8 million in manufacturing costs.
