According to data released by the Japan Machine Tool Industry Association on November 12, Japan's machine tool orders (preliminary value) in October 2013 increased by 8.4% year-on-year to 102.242 billion yen, exceeding the same period in previous years after 18 months. It is also higher than the 100 billion yen that is regarded as an industry vane for two consecutive months. Among them, domestic orders recovered significantly, increasing by 40.5% year-on-year to 38.655 billion yen, increasing for four consecutive months. Manufacturing earnings improved and equipment investment plans increased. In particular, small and medium-sized enterprises such as molds benefited from equipment investment subsidies and started a new round of equipment investment, and their orders accounted for more than 50% of domestic machine tool orders. On the other hand, the value of export orders decreased by 4.8% year-on-year to 63.587 billion yen, the 13th consecutive month of decline. Nonetheless, the reduction was 18.8 percentage points smaller than the previous month. Smartphone orders to China have been sluggish since last fall, but auto orders to North America are looking better, and aircraft orders to Europe are starting to improve.
