Japan's manufacturing confidence hit a five-year low in July, hurt by higher energy and raw material prices and sluggish demand, a Reuters Tankan survey showed on July 17. The Reuters Tankan survey showed that Japan's manufacturing sentiment judgment index was minus 10 in July, down from minus 2 in June and the lowest since minus 11 in April 2003. In addition, high costs and sluggish consumer demand have also pushed service-sector confidence to its lowest level since December 2003. The non-manufacturing sentiment judgment index fell to -3 in July from -2 in June.
