Japanese steelmakers Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) said their joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation, Japan International Shaft Co Ltd (ICI), plans to build a new forging press line in the United States. ICI has been operating in the United States for 20 years and currently operates three forging press lines producing nearly 2.7 million tons of crankshafts annually to meet strong demand in North America. ICI has now decided to open a fourth forging press line. After the completion of the fourth stamping production line, the production capacity will increase to about 1.5 times the current level, reaching 4 million pieces per year. North American auto sales are expected to grow 7 percent over the next five years, NSSMC said. Japanese and South Korean automakers are turning to the U.S. market. Three Detroit-based automakers are switching from cast-iron crankshafts to forged crankshafts due to smaller forged crankshafts, improved engine performance and better fuel efficiency.
