New European X-ray laser achieves milestone

by:Gewinn     2022-05-03
In the first half of this year, an important milestone was achieved in the construction of Germany's largest scientific facility - the underground city project of the European X-ray free electron laser has been completed, and the underground construction has been completed. The two-kilometer-long accelerator tunnel starts at the DESY campus in Hamburg-Barenfeld and goes straight to Ossdorfborn. A particle accelerator for the European X-ray Free Electron Laser will be built in the tunnel, which will be able to accelerate electrons to levels close to the speed of light. Next, these fastest particles are led into so-called photon tunneling, where X-rays are produced. In 2014, the main building of the European Free Electron Laser Project will continue to be constructed in the experimental hall, and there will be three additional floors for laboratories and offices. Meanwhile, DESY and European Free Electron Lasers employees will install infrastructure, scientific instruments and engineering equipment. The remainder is expected to be completed in 2015, and the new X-ray free electron laser is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016.
