A state official said that boring machines trapped underground in downtown Seattle for more than a year were already in the rescue zone on Friday, giving people hope for the stalled $3.
1 billion of the road overhaul may be back on track.
The machine, known as Bertha\'s plan to stop working 10% to replace the aging coastal highway tunnel after digging in December 2013, has allowed the team members to rush to determine how to rescue the 2,000-ton drill.
The Washington Department of Transport said that with its own strength, Bertha was able to cross nearly 20 feet of the concrete on Thursday through the wall leading to the opening of the rescue pit.
It is feared that Bertha, buried 120 feet underground, may not be able to move to the hole on its own.
Before the machine stopped running, it experienced various mechanical problems, including a rise in temperature.
The failure of the machine and other construction problems left the project two years behind and raised concerns about cost overruns and other unforeseen obstacles.
Supporters, including Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, said it was important to ensure the Corridor Project was completed.
The initial Road overhaul is expected to cost $2 billion and will be completed in 2015.
The new schedule for the replacement of the busy Alaska highway viaduct damaged in the 2001 magnitude earthquake is 2017.

A project spokesman said Friday that manufacturer Hitachi Zosen is preparing the next step for Bertha\'s removal and repair.
\"STP tells us that it takes a lot of time and effort to take the machine apart and lift it to the surface,\" a statement said . \".
The machine will have to be lifted by a large crane specially designed to maintain its perimeter.
